The Qualified Employee Program consists of a series of training modules specific to your plan/site which will provide plant personnel with the electrical safety techniques necessary to operate and maintain plant electrical systems. This electrical safety compliance taining will assist in maintaining compliance with OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.269 "Generation, Transmission, and Distribution", 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S - Electrical and other applicable OSHA standards which reference electrical safety.



QEP-06: Understanding Arc Flash Hazards

Purpose:

This module covers the knowledge needed to understand the hazards and associated impacts ofarc flash or blast on the worker. The module will also give the participant an understanding of nature and causes of arc flash or blast.

Objectives:

The employee will be able to:
  • Define or describe using your own words; arc flash, arc blast, incident energy, flash protection boundary, restricted approach boundary, limited approach boundary, prohibited approach boundary, flash hazard analysis
  • State in your own words the 3 factors that affect the extent of your injury when you are exposed to an arc flash or blast
  • State in your own words the nature of arc flash or blast
  • Identify and describe in your own words the typical causes of arc flash or blast
  • Describe the hazards and effects of arc flash or blast on personnel and/or equipment
  • Review the statistics found in the Census of Fatal Injuries concerning arc flash or blast injuries and fatalities
