The Qualified Employee Program consists of a series of training modules specific to your plan/site which will provide plant personnel with the electrical safety techniques necessary to operate and maintain plant electrical systems. This electrical safety compliance taining will assist in maintaining compliance with OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.269 "Generation, Transmission, and Distribution", 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S - Electrical and other applicable OSHA standards which reference electrical safety.



QEP-08: Determining Arc Flash Hazard Risk Categories for

Purpose:

This module covers the requirements for establishing an electrically safe work condition whenworking on or near electrical equipment with a potential for an arc flash or blast. The modulewill also give the participant an understanding the engineering controls found in installed plantequipment that minimizes the occurrence and personnel exposure to arc flash or blast.When given a plant specific scenario, the participants will determine hazards and risks for arc flash or blast.

Objectives:

The employee will be able to:
  • Explain the steps to establishing an electrically safe work condition
  • Describe the engineering controls common to the installed electrical equipment that minimizes the occurrence and exposure to arc flash or blast
  • Make use of plant documents, OSHA Standards, and NFPA-70E to determine flash protection by; identifying hazard categories, determining approach boundaries, and selecting personal protective equipment.
  • Conduct and/or participate in a Pre-Job Briefing using the above information.
