The Qualified Employee Program consists of a series of training modules specific to your plan/site which will provide plant personnel with the electrical safety techniques necessary to operate and maintain plant electrical systems. This electrical safety compliance taining will assist in maintaining compliance with OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.269 "Generation, Transmission, and Distribution", 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S - Electrical and other applicable OSHA standards which reference electrical safety.



QEP-12: Grounding for the Protection of Employees

Purpose:

This module covers the requirements of grounding for the protection of employees. The modulewill also give the participant an understanding of their responsibilities for checking equipmentgrounds and portable protective grounds, the preferred electrical testing technique, and the application and removal of protective grounds.

Objectives:

The employee will be able to:
  • Define or describe in your own words; equipotential zones, ground, grounded, touch potential and step potential
  • State where and when protective grounding for protection of employees is applicable
  • State the fault current requirement for protective grounding equipment
  • State the testing requirement for the lines or equipment that are to be grounded
  • Explain in your own words basic equipment grounding
  • Describe and explain the sequence for placing portable protective grounds
  • Describe and explain the sequence for removing portable protective grounds
  • Describe and explain how to check the equipment grounds and portable protective grounds
