The Qualified Employee Program consists of a series of training modules specific to your plan/site which will provide plant personnel with the electrical safety techniques necessary to operate and maintain plant electrical systems. This electrical safety compliance taining will assist in maintaining compliance with OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.269 "Generation, Transmission, and Distribution", 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S - Electrical and other applicable OSHA standards which reference electrical safety.



QEP-14: Power Generation - Electrical Topics

Purpose:

This module covers the requirements for a variety of electrical work practices referenced in 29CFR 1910.269 (v) & (w). The module will give the participant an understanding of therequirements and their responsibilities for the following power plant electrical equipment and/orsituations; capacitors, current transformer secondaries, backfeed, illumination, use of hydraulic fluids,interlocks and other safety devices, establishing and maintaining access and workingspace about electrical equipment, changing exciter or generator brushes, guarding of roomscontaining electric supply equipment, and guarding of energized parts

Objectives:

The employee will be able to:
  • Define or describe in your own words; electric supply equipment, electric supply lines, and guarded
  • Explain in your own words the required work practices for deenergizing, short circuiting and grounding capacitors
  • State in your own words the required work practices for working on current transformer secondaries
  • State the requirements for identifying and mitigating backfeed on a circuit
  • State the requirements for illumination, and use of hydraulic fluids
  • Cite the requirements for interlocks and other safety devices
  • Cite and explain the requirements for establishing and maintaining access and working space about electrical equipment
  • Cite the required work practices for changing exciter or generator brushes
  • Explain the requirements for guarding of rooms containing electric supply equipment
  • Explain the requirements for guarding of energized parts
